In the mid 1960's Miranda of Japan introduced a very high quality, Xtreme engineering 3-inch reel to reel portable tape recorder to compete with SONY, AIWA, Panasonic, and others. The machine was remarkable for its elegant styling and careful construction, including 16 ball bearings! (Most recorders of the day didn't use any!). It also had a high quality AC bias amplifier with low noise transistors, giving clear recording and a powerful sonic response for a machine of its type.
This unit was on E-Bay and had not been well cared for. Sever battery leakage and "plaque" got into the mechanism, along with a bizarre coating of sticky oil, and even one dead cockroach!
Nevertheless, I restored the machine by careful dismantling, cleaning and replacement of parts - mostly the two rubber belts that had stretched and got caught up inside the mechanism. The amplifier was in fine shape (unusual in a 44 year old machine) and the restored machine, although it suffers from a little "thumping" due to a flat spot on the main drive wheel, is now able to record and playback tapes clearly.

Hi, clydesight. Excellent job!! Perfect restoration. Btw. Any clues about the oil? Was someone trying to "ease the pain" of the poor little machine?

@lgayer
Thanks! Oil? Well, some people make the mistake of squirting oil into any available hole, thinking that is a good thing to do!
Or, if someone took this apart, they used way too much oil. A drop or two is all one needs.

@clydesight I have the same problem when doing repairs on Tesla Sonet Duo reel to reel recorders. I will soon post some videos about this. Sonets were 1960´s recorders (Czechoslovakian) and they were designed to be lubricated through supply and takeup reel shafts - there was a tiny hole. You can probably imagine what some people did - pouring huge amounts of oil into the machine (and damaging every single rubber part inside since they simply used ANY oil available).

Oooh, I want to see your TESLA machines. We don't get many (any?) of these in the US, but I have seen some on YouTube and they look fascinating.
The trick with oil is that you don't need so much. People tend to go overboard, and that makes a mess!
