While I was bicycling down Broadway I noticed a strange chanting like noise coming out of the underground grating at Times Square that had a hypnotic quality about it. I went to the NY Public Library and checked out a documentary on Times and using the "fair use" laws made a commentary on it. Any of you out there in TV or internet land know what this noise is.

  • thanks to blackberryjuice1 and listening to this again I must say I may revise my comments on the holocaust as I research more

  • Paula, as you probably know by now, it's actually a sound installation by artist Max Neuhaus commissioned by the city. It's called Times Square. No, you're not going crazy and no, it's not the rumblings of a ghost world, LOL! Hope this helped.

  • are u serious? It is not an exhaust fan?

  • I was just now riding my bike down broadway after a long and finally productive day at MNN...I was blissing out but didn't pay attention to the tibetan exhaust fan

  • I just googled it...this is amazing really amazing....I thought it was just an exhaust fan and was wondering why I never heard anything like it elsewhere....can one take tours?

  • Maybe he intentionally modeled the sounds after Tibetan chants. I'm sure he'd be amused by your analysis, as many others have claimed to have discovered the sounds themselves. According to you, it's not just an attempt at bliss in the middle of urban commercial chaos, that is layering your presentation of Tibetan politics...

  • No, I promise. Google it "Max Neuhaus Times Square".

  • delt thinks it is a fan

  • have you been there? Why do you not hear this all over town as there must be such fans else where?

  • Hi Paula!

    That's called an exhaust fan.
