we use some crayola sidewalk chalk, hard pastel, and powder streight line chalk. You can make your own that have richer colors. I hope that helps.

do you use artist quality pigment to make your own?

oh yeah and unison is definitly not the rolls royce of pastels. I thought so too until i was introduced to Henri Roche pastels., the same pastels that edgar degas, albert sisley, wistler and other pastelists used. have not been able to use them myself but i have seen them in person the colors just really pop out and from what i heard they are like painting with a fine oil paint.
