  • your explanations make learning a difficult topic realy easy^^ 감사합니다. i'm learning korean on my own and maybe you could suggest some textbooks to learn korean grammar-how to build sentenses etc XD

  • @tambermelon58 While I am no way fluent, I do think you should know for future reference that all the adjectives in English (pretty, tall, cooking) are verbs in Korean.

  • thanks alot! :)

  • @IvyCandanedo Ah, ok, I think I might know why you are confused about it. 있다 means "to exist", not "to have", and 없다 means "to not exist", not "to not have". So when you write a sentence like 저는 돈이 없어요, it does not literally mean "I have no money", but it means something like "to me, money does not exist" or "to me, there is no money". So 돈 is the subject of the verb 없다, and 저는 is just the topic of the sentence and does not have a direct relationship with the verb.

  • @tambermelon58 Oh I didn't know that, I was just taking it from the point of view of noun object verb. But don't you need an object anyways? I mean you need to have or not "something" and that "something" is the object. But idk, I'm just a student xD

  • @IvyCandanedo I think that the verbs 있다 and 없다, and also the descriptive verbs, can never have objects. You can do the action of existing, or being pretty, but you do not do that action "on" or "to" or "with" or "toward" any object.

So in the case of 돈, you have to use either 돈 없어요 (basic form), 돈은 없어요 (for emphasis or contrast), or 돈이 없어요 (to clarify that 돈 is the subject, or "do-er" of the verb). I hope 현우 선생님 or another fluent Korean speaker will correct me if necessary.

  • Thanks for explaining it again :) Particles are tricky in all languages =.=

  • 저는 돈이 있어요 *_*

  • In 저 돈은 없어요 the particle makes it look as if money was the subject of the sentence, but if it said 저 돈을 없어요, it would actually show money as the object of the sentence that it is... right? I want to see if my lessons are paying off =)
