A discussion of the reasons I oppose corporal punishment, including spanking, for children, and an explanation of why I believe such is child abuse. This video is recommended for all parents, or anyone interested in psychology or child development.

  • Proverbs 13:24 One who spares the rod hates his son, but one who loves him is careful to discipline him.

  • TheWorld, I suggest you watch my video Critical Thinking and the Bible #9: Parenting Advice. It's easy enough to find in the Critical Thinking and the Bible play list. I think discussion will be of more interest to you.

  • Good points overall - my jury is having fag (a smoke to you) outside & thinking about this issue.

  • Always good to at least be talking to some juries.

  • good points

  • In other words, if it's effective, it's probably causing emotional pain, and if it's not causing emotional pain, it isn't going to be very effective, and, in some cases, will lead parents to try to make it more painful (though some, thankfully, give up and try other methods).

  • Thanks for your input, cross. I can pretty easily understand why if given the choice you would choose spanking (as I said in the video, pain is a common part of the typical child's daily experience, and in itself isn't a big deal), and why, after choosing that form of punishment, you wouldn't feel emotional hurt at receiving it. Also, some kids are more indifferent to the emotional aspect -- those are the ones whose parents find that spanking has little effect.

  • Interesting Video Nathan.... I didn't really spank my kids when they were young, I found other things that seemed far more effective. But as I was growing up we were spanked. Often times we were given a choice between a spanking or some other punishment and for the most part I chose the spanking because it was quick and easy.... I don't remember feeling any real emotional hurt.

  • It is, but ridiculously entrenched in the culture. So many people are so used to thinking it's a good thing, they refuse to even make the effort to think about it.

  • very good points nathan. My church elder, sometime talks about his unruly life before becoming a christian, and then says "well spanking me never did any harm" Its a meaningless theory
