Please enjoy this very crappy video footage of a demonstration of the EcoTest Terra-P Geiger Counter in action.

I intend to re-perform this demonstration and upload much higher quality video footage of it later.

  • I have the exact same device. The alarm is annoying, so set the threshold to 0. You will get the chirps but no alarm. It won't turn off auto in 5 min either! I took the lead shield out of mine so I could get a better reading of beta, and I sometimes remove the GM tube cover, to allow low beta and alpha. They aren't great, but they are damn good, small, compact and accurate. I see you also have a sample rock from United Nuclear, looks like Trinitite, I have a lot of ores and isotopes to! Nice!

  • Heh....I got a nice chunk of their "ultra" high level U samples before they sold out... :-P

Actually, though, only the containers in this particular video are from United Nuclear. I was actually just using them to contain my *really good* samples from elsewhere. I figured that it made the most sense just to reuse the old United Nuclear containers since they were all ready contaminated, anyways... Thanks for posting... :-)

  • is that geiger counter only for gamma?

  • No, technically, this unit is capable of reading Gamma and Beta emissions. However, it is my understanding that it is inherently more accurate in its ability to reading gamma radiation than it is in its ability to read beta radiation.

In any case, the most accurate way to measure beta & alpha radiation would be to use a Stabilized Assay Meter (which can measure decay), or even a professional grade Geiger counter.

  • The unit I have is very accurate, but it is designed more for general purpose than it is for hardcore scientific precision.

  • Where did you buy it?

  • Actually, the sad news is that I was not filming this with a cell-phone camera. I was using a (clearly) inexpensive 2.0 Megapixel digital camera.

I'm really sorry about the constant moving around. I agree that it is so annoying that it makes the film barely tolerable.

  • how do i get one?

  • The dose rate is displayed in units of microSieverts. The Sievert is the official SI unit of measuring radiation dosage as it affects human (it replaces the older unit of "Roentgen equivalent in man" or "REM"). :-)

  • can't really see that unit, microgray/hr i'm assuming?
