Well, according to his autobio, he did throw his shoulder out of joint when he reached for that clock. Still, knowing the conditions this was filmed under, and despite the cynicism of the present, it IS still scary to watch this 80+ years after it was made.
I didn't know about his shoulder being dislocated, so I imagine it was pretty painful for him until that scene was completed. Scary though it may be to us and even then, it was still a great job nonetheless. Harolds other works that do not feature him in such a dangerous situation are still legendary in their own right. This one though takes the cake.
Great job, no question. Agreed about Harold Lloyd's greatness. Even though there are other film comics that, for me, rank higher - Keaton, Laurel and Hardy, the Marx Brothers primarily - I always give HL his props. Have you seen the climbing sequence in his sound film "Feet First"? One critic says that was even more dangerous than "Safety Last."
