It's a bit of a stretch to suggest that the Harrier is 50 years old. The prototypes of 1959+ had very little in common with the final product.
-
No. The Harrier was used in the Falklands campaign in 1982. So, evidently, the Harrier was "put to use" before 1985.

KEEP ATTENTION TO YOUR HEAD!

The Hawker-Sidley Harrier first flew in 1967. The Brittish Aerospace and McDonnel Douglas (now Boeing) AV8B Harrier II jets are evolutions of this first design.

Whitelitr: Dunno where you get your figures from, but the Harrier was most definitely introduced on 1st April 1969, which is over 40 years ago. It first flew in 1967 but the prototype P.1127 flew in 1960, which is almost 50 years.
