Non conosco un tenore che possa non solo paragonarsi al maestro Franco Corelli, ma neppure avvicinarsi alla sua grandiosità

@Stoltapaura I have never seen it documented that Del monaco or Destefano hated Corelli. In Corellis interview with Zucker, Corelli always speaks very highly of both of them. In each of Del Monacos interviews, when Corelli is mentioned he also speaks well of him.Del Monaco states that he had received Corelli several times as a guest and spoke of tecnique in person and also on the telephone which is documented here on youtube in the MDM interview in italian.

A Corelli studio recording that I have never heard before!! Thank you for posting! I think Franco prepared the Duke and for several years was negotiating to do it, but it never happened. He came much closer to doing Otello though. Several times.

@Stoltapaura Thanks for the interesting explanation. He really sounded great in this aria in 1958.
Jay, do you know if he ever wanted to play the Duke? I'm told that he did but couldn't get any general manager to offer it to him, and I wondered if this was true.

@racheleleeba a.)This is exactly the problem. Francone's career began at a time, where had already made MDM and Di Stefano on stage and also by complete opera recordings, for example, with Callas.Francone was somehow "between two stools". The management at the opera houses and recording studios in the 50s don't wanted its "Stars" making appearances by double trouble.

@racheleleeba b.)Moreover, we must know that just MDM and Di Stefano claimed a absolute status as the best tenors for themselves, so to speak, these despised each "newcomer."
MDM hated Francone and threatened the bosses like a pasha. At the beginning of Francone's career, he was pushed by others into a certain type of roles. When he later realized that he had great success, it's to late...for him.

@racheleleeba c.) But now at the heart of your question, René Seghers and I know by the memory of Loretta and Francone's family, he has made in the late 60s or beginning of the 70s possible at this time in "West Berlin" (GER) for a TV-broadcast the "Duke", I have a Photo of it with costume!!!
