Here is a demo of publishing data out of Salesforce.com via Salesforce Sites. I hope this will help show the power of Sites.

The use case in this example is:
A Foundation uses Salesforce.com for tracking it's granting workflow. They want to publish all their made grants on the web. They want to publish in a format called Grantsfire, which allows for the grant information to be sucked into a database of all grants published in this format.
A big selling point of Salesforce Sites is that it excels at this kind of thing-publishing data that you've already got in Salesforce.com. The grantsfire format isn't important in this case-we can publish in any format we want.
Hopefully this example will illustrate how easy it is to publish info with Sites-the goal is not to say "everyone should publish grants" but rather to show how easy it is to use Sites to tack publishing onto the end of a well-defined process already existing in Salesforce. There are many business processes where some form of publishing is a logical next step that hasn't been done because of technical hurdles.
