The eye: intelligent design or incompetent design?

The eye is often given as evidence of intelligent design.

this is ironic, since an eye is a pretty simple thing to evolve. In fact, eyes have evolved at least 40 seperate times, making the eye a great example of convergent evolution. Furthermore, the eye is a striking example of bad design. In this video I want to point out those features of the eye that suggest it was not the work of an all powerful creator. Either the eye evolved throguh natural processes, or god is incompetent.

exhibit 1) glasses. We've all seen them. Many of you use them. Why on Earth did we need to invent these things if God is such a great designer?

exhibit 2) the optic nerve. Now you would think that it would be beneficial to have your visual information processed right away. You would like it to go straight from your eyes to your brain. However, look at the route that the visual data takes through your brain. Not only do these two data streams cross over each other, but they snake around the entire brain before ending up at the back of the head, taking the longest possible route before being making their way into the brain.

exhibit 3) the blind spot. We all have a blind spot. Do you know why?Well, the optic disc at the back of the eye has a hole in it so the optic nerve can come through. Here is a question -why the hell is the optic nerve in the front of the optic disc anyways? Why doesn't it come out the back of the optic disc? All vertebrates have a blind spot, but other eyes have evolved better designs.

exhibit 4) the fovea. The fovea is a portion of the eye with very good visual acuity. A healthy fovea is essential for reading, watching television, driving, and basically any activity that requires the ability to see detail. Unfortunately, the fovea accounts for only 2 degrees of our visual field. This means if your rapid muscular control of your eye movements is not working properly, you will be in serious trouble.

So there you have it. The human eye. A perfect example of incompetent design.

To say that Darwin was a prophet sent by the devil to preach a new genesis for atheist consumption is not a lie.
