So I decided it would be smart if I made videos I can actually understand and rewatch, and not just caption going from my pre-recording notes and not be able to understand them again. So this is it, editing was, well, minimal but there's a bit in the middle I admit, I was nervous and fingerspelling is my bane.
Translation follows, I'll figure out how to do CC
Hi, I'm Laurence (name sign) - my name is french, but people can call me Lauren.
I live in Montreal (sign for Montreal), in Canada. I study at the university of Montreal, in history and anthropology. I only learned to sign ASL when I turned 23, last year; before I tried to hide I was becoming deaf younger. Sometimes I'm not very smart.
I decided to start making new videos again. First because I miss making videos. Second because I thought maybe it could help my signing become better. If you think I'm wrong, I'll be happy if you tell me, because I want to become better. Third, because I thought if I don't make them in english again, I don't need to ask hearie friends to caption them for me to understand my own videos.
I will try to make more videos when I'm not crazy busy with school. For now, I'm finished.
Bye :)
(end)
Also, I'll just note I'm super mega thankful to friends who I know have youtube accounts but I'm not sure what their names here are since I only see their vlogs on lj... love you guys :D
P.S.: As an aside, I'm aware I sign change where I mean to say become, nervosity got the better of me and I uploaded that take without noticing.
(old/alternate/less pretentious working title: Yet Another Trans Vlog, now in ASL - I promise not to make horrendously long titles all the time)

  • after watching this video. you seem like a nice person. you have a good personality I can tell. sorry about the other comment I replied on "vrs (blip beep) yous" yeah, it was pretty ridiculous to use that kind of language but I've got to admit it did make me laugh at first then realized it was the prank calls they were making. but it was interesting to see all interpreters' reaction. they have put them on a real awkward spot. shame on them for abusing the video relay service just for fun...

  • It's alright, I know I'm a firebrand anyway. Besides I'm probably the only deaf kid I know who never abused relay... and then again that's not exactly 100% true since I did ask an IP Relay operator to swear at a comcast helldesk employee for thinking that calling us on the phone was a good idea when our files stated that the boy and I are both deaf.

  • But I was 23 ;) much different

  • With Thanksgiving approaching you have been on my mind, with so many others that we know in common....and look how radiate your face and smiles are!! Oh simply gorgeous.

    Much love....Sarah

  • Thank you, as usual your kindness is touching :) - I try to keep as many of you as I can on my mind even if I'm terrible at staying in touch. It feels good, however, to now have a voice that makes me feel more present, more aware of my own words, and it seems to help. It's a bit the smile of someone who is happy to be back, and the smile of someone who feels she can now communicate with the world in a voice that's her own :)

  • You are incredibly beautiful!!! You're the perfect mix of 'ivory girl'/'girl next door', and sweet intellectual nerdy geek. I am a political science and anthropology grad from Philadelphia. I don't understand ASL, and I might sound like an idiot for saying it but; "Damn...you make signing look sexy as hell!!!"

  • I'm profoundly deaf and I'm not using capital letter "D" as Deaf... I find it utterly absurd to use the capital "D" letter for deaf... it reminds me of God with big G... that's for deaf people who are proud being deaf ... Deaf rules!! Deaf power!! (chuckles) whatever... I'm simply frustrated with the deafhood who insisted on using the capital "D" letter for deaf... anyway... just ought you to know how I feel.. thanks for listening anyway... lol

  • This is awesome. I'm not D/deaf and I don't know sign language but I think it's beautiful :-) I would love to learn but my hands can't cope with it unfortunately. But it's lovely. It's like a dance. And so complex and layered.
