Here's a little abstract piece I was inspired to work on in my spare time. I don't do much 3D, so I wanted to play around with reflections and refractions in Lightwave.
I modeled these ring-like objects and lit them with a white-board-like reflector, then rendered them out of Lightwave as RLA sequences from several different camera angles and focal lengths. I composited the renders with a background, text, and a glow effect in After Effects. In addition, I used the depth information that you can store in deluxe RLA files to simulate lens depth of field. The effect isn't quite as accurate as rendering it direct from your 3D program, but it does not require multiple passes, and the position and depth of the focus plane, as well as the aperture size can be tweaked in your 2D compositing program post-3D render, which makes it far more flexible and fast.
Wish you could download screensavers like this for your PC/Xbox/PS3/iPhone/iPad/iPod Y/N? Answer : Y

Very nice. Did you create the background lighting effect in 3d or after effects?
