Yedid Nefesh was composed by R' Eliezer Azikri, a great kabbalist and halachists of 16th century Israel. One of his central themes was always the intense love of God that one must feel, and this is readily apparent in this beautiful hymn.
Each of the four stanzas begins with one of the four letters of the Holy Name, the Shem ha Meforash, the Tetragrammaton.
