Febuary 7th 2009. Established in 1875 and after a long tradition including success in the FA Cup and participation in the football league there's much talk that this week will see the end of Darwen FC as they're the subject of a winding up order in the high court. Today they took on AFC Blackpool in the North West Counties League. It was a trip down memory lane for me. I last attended the Anchor Ground in the 1974/75 season as a teenager to watch the same fixture in the Lancashire Combination. It was a big game as Darwen FC went on to win the league.
A few of us were lucky enough to travel on the players' coach. Back then AFC Blackpool playing as Blackpool Mechanics FC played in green and black - the same colours as Highfield School. Football hooliganism was rife and at the game there was a big crowd and after the match and following defeat I was threatened with violence and had my 'Highfield School green and black scarf' physically taken from me. 34 years on the ground had changed a lot, the crowd was a lot smaller and I was a lot older. In a game of few chances AFC Blackpool won the game 1-0 through this goal from Wood that made AFC manager Stuart Parker happy. Not the most exciting of videos but one that may go down as the being the last competitive goal at Darwen FC' s famous Anchor Ground. Fingers crossed that one of the planet's oldest football clubs does not go to the wall.
