@missupernatural21 It was his first time using a gun going by the reaction on his face after shooting it (of course that could have just been disbelief at what he had just done) so it wouldn't be a stretch to say that due to his amateurish grip and other factors, instead of the gun aiming at his intended target (the guy who beat him up) it could have shook on firing causing the bullet to fly randomly and hit Peyton. I'm not a gun expert though so what do I know?
