This is an improved quality video from the first one I uploaded. After rendering to FLV format, the first upload was too blurred to read the words and music easily. Hopefully this version, with its slightly different approach, will make it easier to follow the words along with the music. For best results, play in Full Screen mode.

"Heaven Is My Home" was recorded by the Chuck Wagon Gang in a 1940 recording session in Dallas, Texas. The song was written by J.R. Baxter, Jr. and my uncle Fred L. Swilling and copyrighted in 1937 as part of a compilation in a Stamps-Baxter song book titled "Starlit Crown". The song is also included in a collection of Gospel songs, some written by Baxter and Swilling, titled "Cheerful Melodies" and published by Fred L. Swilling.

Notice the shape notes that are still popular among choirs and Southern Gospel singers. Among artists that used shape notes to facilitate learning to read music was Maybelle Carter of The Carter Family, famous for her unique guitar style and her recording of "Wildwood Flower". For more about shape notes, visit Wikipedia's site at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shape_note.

While Copper Creek Records/Sony Music recorded and released the "Chuck Wagon Gang Higher 1940 Dallas Session" album, the copyright to the song is maintained by Brentwood-Benson Music Publishing, Inc., who bought out Stamps-Baxter Music Company. The copyright will not go into public domain until 2032; 95 years after the original copyright date.

  • ThomasASwilling, this was amazing! Thanks for putting these scanned copies of the old song book on here also. I wonder how hard it would be to get a copy via e-mail. We would love to learn this song to sing in church.

  • @kephartskutlery Thank you for your kind comment. Sadly, the song book is no longer in print. My brother and I have the last two remaining copies. However, I would be happy to scan the pages and send you a copy either of "Heaven Is My Home" or the entire song book, whichever you prefer. E-mail me at al at senaa dot org, and I will reply to you with the requested scans attached. Put "Song Request" in your message's subject line so I'll know to read it and not delete it. Thank you again.

  • @kephartskutlery I sent you the scans of the song "Heaven Is My Home" I hope you received the e-mail and the attachment and were able to open the attachment.
