  • @sandeesk11 No, the song is one of my desert-island favorites because it's true and human. Possessions can and will possess you, the acquisition of things is vall in vanity, and if you find true love and happiness, you can be a cripple living in a shack and be completely content. It's false only in that American materialism overwhelms the human sentiment of the song, but it makes the notion no less true. You can live a life based solely on the lyrics of this song.

  • @MsSarjen When the Gershwins were auditioning singers for their Porgy in the late-30's, they picked their star (I don't think it was Paul Robeson, maybe it was, I can't remamber), because all the others came in, singing Negro spirituals. They picked the one with the audacity to sing Italian opera.

I just never cared for bluesy versions of SUMMERTIME or IT AINT NECESSARILY SO because they just seem lazy and obvious, as if so-called Negroes SHOULD ONLY SING IN THOSE GENRES.

  • @Russebby I agree completely! The Gershwins wrote this to prove afro-americans could sing the opera, and this version proves it. And because of this adaptions, I become a huge fan of Willard White.

  • To me, Willard White is the perfect Porgy. I love his voice and his charisma.

  • keep pressin 4

  • love it!!

  • this is amazing

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahhaahahahahhaahahah

  • I read somewhere that "I Hate Your Struttin' Style" is often cut from full-length productions of Porgy and Bess.

    Why?!

  • Go, Maria, go! I love that bit -- she really lays ol' Sporting Life to rest.
