I remember this Meadowlands from the early 50s or late 40s by De Pauls Infantry Chorus. I always thought that was the best version of this piece...and still do. Its kind of like opera being done in German as opposed to Italian. War like or not the tune is beautiful,and I am not sure what the lyrics mean. I guess I will have to ask my niece who has become a citizen from Russia
