  • Not seen this for years! Those were VERY exciting days. As former Paintbox product manager I was constantly amazed at the results produced by users around the world. This video contains many examples. For example there're a few frames of a beached boat. I saw Sir Huge Casson, then in his 80s, meet the Box for the first time and create picture from scratch within an hour – proof (again) of a true creative tool for creative people.

  • @TheGrumpstein, that sounds great! I presume you found one in the UK, correct? Please, if you find the time, make some high-resolution pictures and videos. What kind of system do you have? Is it an MC68000 based one? (Classic, V-Series and so forth.) Quantel was always very reluctant to release information about their hardware and software.

  • @eMGeeGFX I managed to get one from an old Quantel repair place. Came with all the manuals and spare pens/optical disks etc. It's still great fun! Cost $500 but it was something I always wanted since I was a kid ;-).

  • I wonder if that was a coincidence, but the exterior (physical) design of the system enclosure is very reminiscent of that of DEC (as in Digital Equipment Corporation) and its VAX systems.

  • The copy/cut and paste feature in modern Quantel suites still works like it did in the 1980s and '90s. I don't know if they offer alternatives, but I found that surprising (when I got my hands on a GenQ). I guess there are lots of old school Quantel operators out there still. I hope Quantel realizes that attracting others and allowing alternative methods would certainly help that cause (along with changing the pricing)...

  • These were very expensive. Some were over $100,000.

  • @toresbe, me neither, but try to get your hands on one of these things... They're still extremely pricey! (Yes, even the 1980s ‘Classic’ models.) They're also quite rare, hard to find. I have yet to see one complete system to go for less than (US) $ 300 on eBay or so.

  • Fascinating device. I'd really love to play around with one of those things for a while.

  • This really brought it all back! Great days they were. Love the Baker v/o too!
