@mazay83 I had The Same feeling That Danny was really sure that he's gonna die, he conveyed the message brilliantly without acting at all if you can get what I mean... Amazing and Unbelievable, this man really is. If this man was still alive i would have kissed his both hands for just this beautiful soul...
Third, the operation itself seemed quite innocuous but only a medical mistake turned it into something dramatic with a major artery rupture and serious bleeding which led to these massive blood transfusions - so who knows, had everything turned out right, maybe this contaminated blood would never have got into his bloodstream. So here one can only keep asking - WHY, WHY, WHY did it have to happen ???
But trying to see it differently, I thought - hey, after all it was Danny who was IN PAIN because of this heart condition and he simply felt something had to be done about it. Secondly, then he was still a passionate pilot and quite reasonably believed that for flying any even minor heart condition deviations could have disastrous consequences (so apparently Danny did have good reasons for this decision).
Oh God, I feel exactly the same way, he was gone far too untimely :-( An unnecessary operation... But, you know, I gave it some thought too and that remark from his biographer M.Gottfried that "Danny wouldn't stand anything but perfect" (stated as a reason for his decision to undergo this bypass surgery), with due respect, sounds somewhat cynical to me, as if it was only Danny himself to blame for his "stubborness".
Lovely to know that there are others out there who admire this great man. Yet for all his knowledge of medicine he didnt take his surgeon friend's advice not to have that silly operation. Wish we could have him back - his talent was gigantic.
You are right, and even worse - it was more than prophetic for Danny, because he ACTUALLY knew he was dying... ever since that fateful operation back in 1983 he realised, being expert in medicine as he was that he "was not long for this world" (oh, when I heard him say that at 0:19, I went to pieces crying). But here now I admire the enormous courage it took him to tackle such a painful theme and brilliantly convey the message of humanism ! That's what makes Danny really great at all times :-)

This was almost prophetic for Danny Kaye - but he portrayed his character wonderfully even with his health being so poor.
