This tiger salamander was filmed at Pratt's Wayne Woods Forest Preserve in Wayne. Tiger salamanders are the largest salamander species common to DuPage County, and they become active earliest in the year. From February through April, female salamanders will head to ponds and wet areas to lay eggs. Males will come along and fertilize the eggs. By fall, the larvae transform to adulthood and leave the water for land. Tiger salamanders must have cool, moist places to live, such as under rocks and fallen logs. Adults eat worms, slugs, beetles and other invertebrates.
