Well, from that I can deduce a couple of things: 1. 37s have a really crappy horn, and 2: HST drivers seem to like playing a tune!

Correct, waving is more successful ad it doesn't make you look like a complete nutter! Don't wave with two hands! It's very dangerous and the driver could possibly stop incase of an emergancy. Beware!

Forgive me but why the hell do trains really have horns? I have always wondered. Is it for safety or some kind of communication?

you can either do a big wave with one or to hands, or do a horn chain pulling action, id wave on a bridge or embankment, and do the horn chain on a station.
