Photographer Douglas Hodgkins captures the story of the satos of Puerto Rico in this multimedia project. From the streets of Puerto Rico, to the "Shelter of Miracles" in San Juan, on to the airport for a flight to our state side partner shelters and then finally to their forever homes - join Doug and the volunteers of Save a Sato on this remarkable journey.

"Sato" is slang for street dog. Save A Sato is a non-profit organization dedicated to easing the suffering of Puerto Rico's homeless and abused animals. We rescue satos from the streets and beaches, give them medical care, food and shelter, and plenty of love. When they are healthy, we send them to one of our shelter partners for adoption into loving homes.

  • Ok, is this a video about the after? Because the few dogs actually shown on the street don't look bad at all. In good shape actually and not any "worse" than any common wild gray wolf. So basically: What should I feel sorry for here?

  • I'm Warren (senior living along No. Shore of Boston). Always wanting to have dog, I visited Northeast Animal Shelter 10X, unsure whether could afford.

On 11th visit, I ran into Crystal, 6-mo old SATO (mostly Basenji, some Corgi); mutual love at first sight. Thank God!

Now, Layla's companion, teacher/ protector, incredible laughter/happiness. We jog/run 7 miles daily on beach. I've lost 65 lbs.

She's my Psychiatric Service Dog/Certified Therapy Dog (visiting medical facilities and schools.

  • By the way, Layla's a Sato ... my dear companion, love of my life, teacher and emotional protector.

  • i like how they fly them off the island because most of the people on this island are too snobby or careless to adopt a dog like this. Sad, really, how uneducated people are here.

  • donde es eso?

  • @InYoUrFaCe218 Idiot, dont blame ALL puerto ricans, im good, i try to help nearby dogs and feed them but i cant take them in but at least i pay attention to them...

  • I am Puerto Rican and my dog is a Sato but most people here do not care. People have to learn to neuter their dogs and not trow them away. Also the government here does nothing to help solve the stray animal over population here in the island.

  • Its a shame!! poor dogs....puertoricans don't know how to take care of pets and when they get tired of them they throw them on the streets.. they say: THEY ARE JUST DOGS"......i feel so sad for those puppies and all those dogs because they are so freaking sweet, overall they are the best dogs =(

  • Our dog came from Puerto Rico, from a wonderful foster mom to St. Hubert's in NJ. Her name was Sol, we renamed her Kama. She is all energy and love. Every person and every dog in my neighborhood and at the dog park loves her and she loves them back. We didn't know her "breed" had a name at all. The DNA test ID'ed her as Chow/American Eskimo/Schipperke. Go figure. Thank you for this video.

  • At 4:16 that is my dog i got from this program.
