What are you crowdsourcing today? Probably more than you think.

Irrespective of what opinions you have on the concept of crowd-sourcing, many have found it to be a useful whether they be large organisations or individuals. They realise the power and potential of crowd-sourcing, gaining larger data-sets than are possible through traditional methods. You submit to the crowd on a daily basis implicitly or explicitly with examples in this video that I made for a course on 'Internet Driven Innovation' at the London School of Economics.

This video gives examples of crowdsourcing by Kickstarter, Soundcloud, Twitter, Facebook, OpenIDEO, youtube, ReCaptcha, Amazon, Google Demo Slam, Oxford English Dictionary, WIkipedia, Google Earth,

Video style inspired by M. Wesch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gmP4nk0EOE

  • @GregoryRWood I am very excited about that ! Used his WEB2.0 video in a class I taught on 'design in the digital age.' pen-html-xml became handcraft to CNC/3DPrint.

  • @Zach, I couldn't agree more, I would like to email you a recent article (PDF) on the subject of crowdsourcing that explains the models, incentives and frameworks. Fwd your email address

Cwdsourcing is not static, it is evolving. At the moment, you can crowdsource a logo from 99designs that usually produces a cool graphic. They will not dig deep into your brand and best express the identity alike a dedicated firm, but that does not mean cwdsourcing is incapable, it just hasn't tackled that yet.

  • Thanks everyone. I just noticed how cool watching the character count in the corner of twitter (final slide) is....

  • James, I love how you express the idea, clear, concise and creative!

  • This is a great video! i didnt think of amazon or youtube as crowdsourcing before.. and i love the fact that the dictionary was crowdsourced. i had NO idea we are contributing to translating books by using Captcha!

also, thanks for reminding me about openIDEO!

  • Thank you for sharing :-)

  • Most excellent video. I heard about it from a tweet by Michael Wesch. When you attract attention from someone like that, you know you done good!

  • Great video! How can this video have so few views! :(((

  • Well done James! This was great to see and learn from.

  • Now that we are seeing all these amazing crowd-sourcing examples, I think there needs to be some serious research done on the incentives and behavioral characteristics of certain models, in order to build a framework that helps individuals and organizations leverage and create their own networks. Then you could identify the right crowdsourcing strategy based on the intrinsic motivations of your crowd, the type of problem you wish to overcome, or the data you are already collecting. Any thoughts?
