In my pastel drawings I'm using usually a mix of soft pastels from Schmincke(the best!) and Jaxell, also Pitt pastel pencils from Faber-Castell.

For good results the right choice of the paper is crucial. Smooth paper doesn't work very well with pastels, my favorite is canson Mi-Teintes, which comes as an added bonus in a lot of nice colors. There is also a very good paper made by Fabriziano called Tiziano, but I have less experience with it.
And don't give up too soon, when it comes to drawing, the most important things are practise and patience. :)
