What caused a toxic spill at the BP site on Prudoe Bay?
An investigation is underway Tuesday night to figure that out.
The site has been the scene of five fires in recent weeks.
The spill was discovered Monday in a five mile piece of pipe that is used to transport crude from the drill site to the oil processing center. BP spokesperson, Steve Rinehart, says the line had been out of service and empty for several weeks. The leak happened as the company was bringing the line back into service. Almost 2,000 gallons of methanol, oil and water spilled onto the frozen tundra. The methanol came from a deicer that was being used to clear an ice blockage in the line.
