And the rockets red glare and the bombs in the air
Gave us proof through the night that our flag was still there
And the flag marked with blood, with the blood of our hands

And a man on the cross, and the cross on our hearts
Has it done nothing more, than to drive us apart?
It is saying how america has driven nations apart by war, in the arrangement of our national anthem.

I'd be completely in favor of this becoming our new National Anthem; it'd be easier to sing too. Not quite so many high notes, and the chorus is awesome in the original sense of the word.

The reason he's so appealing to everyone is because he has such a modest, almost vulnerable feel to him. The way he sings is like he's happy to share his music but is maybe a bit shy about it.
