@xaxie1 well, it's similar to the phrase "Here's to Marco Polo and his adventures" when someone takes a toast while drinking. in this movie, Bogart loved staring at Bergman so he says "Here's looking at you kid." sort of like a cheers similar to drinking. also, bogart has played a lot of gangster roles in movies so his speech wasn't always accurate. i think it makes the quote that more unique.
