Performed on Vladimir Horowitz's personal Steinway Model D concert grand piano:

Serial #: 314503
Year: 1943
Size: 8'11 1/2"
Concert #: CD503
Technician: Franz Mohr

SPECIAL THANK YOU:
Thanks to the friendly people over at West Music (Moline, Illinois) for giving me the opportunity to play on the piano of a legend!

VLADIMIR HOROWITZ:
Vladimir Horowitz made a name for himself with audacious, unconventional interpretations and exhilarating displays of virtuosity. The man took risks, and he was not afraid to let his personality, replete with idiosyncrasies, show. His technique employed in notoriously difficult, fingerbuster showpieces and his own demanding transcriptions was frequently discussed and lauded, but his interpretations of simpler works from the classical period and the more lyrical compositions of the romantic movement were equally brilliant. Horowitz did not always hit all the right notes and he would be one of the least likely piano greats to be considered a purist, but in his finest moments he attained a level of artistry that other musicians spend their lives hoping to achieve.

IT'S BEEN AWHILE...
I realize it has been a long time since I last uploaded a piano solo video. I appreciate all the kind comments, messages, ratings, etc., and I apologize for not being able to respond to everyone. Medical school has proven to be very demanding, but I was able to make this recording of one of my all-time favorite pieces over spring break.

MY PERFORMANCE:
With a fairly bad cold, lack of practice, and the nervousness of playing on the personal Steinway of one of my classical piano heroes, this isn't the best performance I've ever given of this masterpiece. However, this was a special occasion for me, and I thought I would share it with fellow piano music lovers despite my technical and interpretive shortcomings. Hopefully, I am still able to convey the depths, passion, and haunting beauty of what I believe to be one of the greatest pieces ever written for piano...

Thanks for watching!

  • It's a pleasure to hear and watch you play. I have enjoyed several of your videos.

I had a similar experience at Steinway Hall, Plano TX where I had the privilege of playing a piano signed by and played on by Van Cliburn.

My video is "You are my Hiding Place - Van Cliburn Steinway grand piano" if you care to watch.

Best to you as you continue your studies.

  • Absolutely Superb. Some piano you have there.
