Kid Creole and the Coconuts is an American musical group created and led by August Darnell. Its music incorporates a variety of styles and influences, in particular American and Latin American, South American, Caribbean, Trinidadian, Calloway and conceptually inspired by the big band era. The Coconuts are a glamorous trio of female backing vocalists whose lineup has changed throughout the years.

Their commercial breakthrough came with 1982's 'Tropical Gangsters', which hit #3 in the UK and spun off three Top 10 hits with "Stool Pigeon", "Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy" and "I'm a Wonderful Thing, Baby". In the US the album was retitled 'Wise Guy' and "I'm a Wonderful Thing, Baby" flirted with the R&B charts.

  • @63sheerdelite Yes they're great, never saw them live but there was a video of them performing in NYC back in 80-81 that was just remarkable, best live performance I ever saw on video, must have been amazing live.

  • What talent, charisima, showmanship, what sexy dancers and backup singers, and what a great band! I can name so many somewhat similiar acts that got to be big(er) stars in the US--without nearly as much going for them.

  • they still perform tho ;) they were in the hotel i work in 2 days ago (Amsterdam)

  • @koalman Actually, Christmas '81.

  • I got to see them in, must have been '86 in Seattle. I first heard them in 82 when a woman loaned me her Walkman and some tapes for a few days when I was in Eastern Montana alone for Christmas. I was immediately enthralled. Great band.
