"AsSalaamu Alaykum" is, yes, an explicitly Muslim greeting, however, historically, it has not been the custom of Muslims to understand that just because one says it, that they are a Muslim, since it differs from the declaration of faith. There are even examples of this during the life of the Prophet Muhammad, of non-Muslims using the greeting, but the response is different. Muslims use the phrase as a greeting, and non-Muslims desiring friendly communications in Muslim lands do likewise.
