After the kiln reaches a temperature of 1300 degrees celsius, I throw handfuls of rock salt into a spy hole every five minutes or so, for up to an hour (5 kg of salt per firing). It hits the surface of the pots and fluxes the clay body into glass, creating the characteristic 'orange-peel' effect of classic salt-glazed ware.
