Debian on my iMac G3 (600mhz 256mb ram)

The other day I installed Ubuntu 8.04 on this system ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I75I13GZyIk ) but it was rather sluggish and slow. Today I decided to give Debian 5.04 a shot, and what do you know it runs a good bit faster than Ubuntu did on this system!

System Specs, 600mhz PPC G3, 256MB ram.

If anyone wants to give it a shot, here is how I did it!

I downloaded and burned the PPC version of Debian 5.04 (minimal net install CD), threw it in the disc and booted her up! When prompted for software packages to include I selected "Desktop Environment" and "Standard System" and let it do it's thing. The whole process took about 45 minutes. After it was installed, let the system boot until it locked at the login screen. At this point all I did was press control+option+F1 a few times until a terminal opened up. At that point I logged in as root. and did the following commands,

"cd /etc/X11"
"cp xorg.conf xorg.conf-bu " (backing up the original xorg.conf file!)
"wget http://debe17.com/imac-ppc-slot-loader-500_600_700-xorg.conf" (an awesome xorg file for imac G3 systems!)
"cp imac-ppc-slot-loader-500_600_700-xorg xorg.conf" (renames the downloaded file to xorg.conf)

After that all that's left is to reboot, and login to setup your system however you want!

@directxxxx Sure, head to/ debian.org/distrib/netinst and look under "Small CDs" and click the link for PowerPC I think it's up to 6.0.3 now though

@kris200998 Oh no lol.. far too weak a processor for that. It will surf the internet fairly well though in general.

Worked great on 2 of my graphite G3's. Ha, it works better with Debian on it than OS 9 or 10.3, that's for sure. Both are great operating systems, but Debian has a bit more web 2.0 in it based on it's date of creation. Great post! Good to see you got it working beyond the command line. There's also Arch Linux for PPC processors, I'm going to try it out tonight.

@mlthomp1981 I tried installing it on an iBook G3, and the sound refuses to work. >__< I'll try installing it to my iMac (same exact as yours), because it seems to work on that.
