Overview:
The University of Leeds has 32,000 students and 7,000 staff. Monique teaches in the School of Performance and Cultural Industries. One of her tasks is to produce period costumes for particular actors and actresses from small scale drawings. By measuring parts of the drawing and knowing the size of the performer the costume was originally designed for, she can calculate and design the costume for the new performer. Monique also describes how she solved a particular problem of exactly how big a pair of boxing gloves had to be in a particular scene of a childrens programme. Colleagues designing sets and furniture use models in the ratio of 1:25. These tasks involve problem solving, measurement, enlargement, scale factor, ratio, 2-D representations of 3-D objects.
