Local National Guardsmen are deploying to Afghanistan

CLINTON — The Iowa Army National Guard hopes it can provide around 30 Clinton-area soldiers with a proper and memorable send-off Monday.

The troops are just a few of the approximately 2,800 Iowa soldiers heading to Afghanistan in the next few weeks. But before they go, the Guard will host various send-off ceremonies starting this weekend and going on through the week for all the soon-to-be deployed troops throughout the state.

Clinton is home to members of the First Battalion, 133rd Infantry of the Iowa National Guard. The battalion dates to the start of the Civil War and is known for its endurance. In World War II, they were given the nickname, "Ironman Battalion," after serving more consecutive days in combat than any other Army unit.

The battalion received a similar honor in Iraq four years ago.

The Clinton Guardsmen will have their ceremony this Monday at the National Guard armory at 1200 13th Ave. North.

The ceremony starts at 2 p.m. and should last an hour. The public is encouraged to come early and enjoy some food before the send-off.

After the ceremony in Clinton, the platoon will go to Dubuque on Tuesday to meet up with the rest of the unit and enjoy another send-off ceremony. The troops will then report to Camp Shelby, Miss., for additional training and preparation before heading to Afghanistan.
