he is one of those "modern" pianists that in an interview claimed he didn't like "spontaneiety" or to put in his "interpretation" and that claim to play by "letting the music speak for itself" ...whatever THEY mean by that. but as a consequence , imo, says little. i think. i'd prefer the idiosyncrasies of others , agree or not with their approach, but as a listener and pianist myself -- I want them to "say something of YOUR own".
always , after listening to pollini and several of his "fellow greats" of his generation i keep going back to the Rubinsteins and Richters and Horowitzes and Goulds...they had technique to burn , musical genius, complete expressiveness and "something to say" ...they were great Musicians, artists and pianists. Pollini is a great musician and pianist.
@shilloshillos I also feel the same way about pollini. after all the years of hearing his recordings from his different decades - i can understand the EARLY statement by Artur Rubinstein after their judge panel gave Pollini the top Chopin Prize: "TECHNICALLY ...he is already better than any of us".....
my impression is -- intelligent mind -- but doesn't seem to really have "grown" from those "competition days"...great technician and all
Poliini is one of the least expressive pianists I have ever heard. I have several of his recordings and I can honestly say I don't like anything. Excellent technique but expression is lacking.
