Horseshoe Curve was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad due to the difficulty of constructing a railroad through the summit of the Allegheny Mountains. Opening on February 15, 1854, it was considered an engineering marvel and it served as a part of the Pennsylvania Railroad's main line to the west. Additional owners were the Penn Central and Conrail. The line is currently owned by Norfolk Southern. The curve has been in continuous operation since 1854. Upon hearing of the proposed break-up of Conrail in the late 1990s, I decided to capture the final curtain call for Conrail at this historic location.
