There are still quite a few cults gaining converts on the fringes of the big religions, and the growth of evangelical Christianity in the US is truly scary, as is the competition between Muslim and Christian missionising for the 'souls' of Africans and Chinese.

It was a mistake that took thousands of years to correct, but one which, I think, will not be repeated again as long as history books are written. We've long since passed the age at which new religions can crop up successfully, and the old ones are slowly vanishing. Superstition is fading, in some places moreso, in others less, but gradually and inevitably everywhere. :)
