I'd also like to throw in the fact that the tenor line of the second verse almost became a descant of it's own.
I love this piece, we had it played at my Fathers funeral 2 years ago. This is a fantastic arrangement (final verse) on an amazing organ.

@nauort23 I see thanks for the info. Take care.

@MrJackanthony She inherited ownership of the Washington Post from her father. She was a very wealthy, powerful, political figure in Washington (and in the world) and fronted the media campaign that eventually brought down Pres. Nixon during Watergate. So, she had a very wide range of friends and foes, to say the least.

@nauort23 LOL Touche. i don't know who she is so no comment there :)

@MrJackanthony Yes, and hardly "too festive for the occasion"--even if you didn't like her.
-
@nauort23 :P Musically a descant would have been all this needed.

Yes, and the tune itself is known as St. Anne, composed by William Croft in 1708.

All we need are some trebles for the final verse. Then I won't have to keep running to Westminster Abbey on YouTube. It always makes me feel like Benedict Arnold.

perhaps it was thought that a soaring descant would be a little too festive for the occasion
