I think this song was taken as most directors as a comical break from the seriousness of the second act with songs like "Next" and "Ne me quite pas". I just saw this in Stratford (Ontario, Canada) and it was absolutely amazing, would see it again any day! The entire point of the show was to show how resonate music can remain with us, even years after it was written. J'aime cette versione aussi/ I like this version too :)
Now this is what I call having now idea what you're really singing about. The show flopped because it missed the point. The song is a metaphor for something much more serious...here it's reduced to parody.
I was really getting into it and then...it stopped. Bah!
