RTE News coverage of the launch for Ronnie Drew's last album, The Last Session: A Fond Farewell at O'Donoghue's Pub in Dublin, Ireland.

The collection on this album is no more, nor no less, than Ronnie Drews musical epitaph, the music he wanted the public to hear after a lifetime of playing and recording in the world-renowned style of the Dubliners and their associates.
This album is different, the musicians backing Ronnie are jazz players, the duets are with some of our leading singers in a diversity of styles, and Hugh Buckleys inspired arrangements place Ronnie in a setting he has never had before.

It is also something of great historical importance Ronnie Drews last record, made between November 2007 and May 2008, three months before he died of cancer.

The choice of songs was Ronnies call. September Song, the great jazz song Nobody Knows, Shane McGowans A Rainy Night in Soho, Mike Hanrahans The Best of Times, The Auld Triangle, Loves Old Sweet Song, The Last Wave and Molly Malone.

All the guest singers loved the project and were honoured to record with Ronnie.
Damien Dempsey said Now, Ive finally made it. Ive recorded with Ronnie Drew.
This was one of the very best days of my life. Emmanuel Lawler said afterwards. Mary Coughlan said It was a once in a lifetime thrill.

Hugh Buckley recalled the unique atmosphere in the intimate studio during the sessions. We were all friends and there was a great vibe of mutual respect in the air.
Each day in the studio was full of that wonderful feeling that something special was happening.

  • @ErnstBecker Ronnie was a once off. That won't happen twice.

  • I can't see or hear anything of Ronnie or his voice anymore without getting emotional. He was such a big influence to me as a person and as a musician. Thank you Ronnie. Thanks to you, I've become a better musician & an easier going person. RIP friend. You are a genuinely missed good soul.

  • @ErnstBecker No one could touch his Raw talent and amazing voice. every time I hear his voice I shed a few tears

  • @0876911790 I know I was watching it aswell and I couldn't believe it when my nana told me that it was Ronnie Drew, he will be missed by Ireland,

R.I.P Ronnie Drew, GO ON YA GOOD THING!!!!!

  • I,m drinking to ye Ronnie...That voice alone!!! Ride on

  • I think there might be a bit of Ronnie-style cynism involved. Y'know... IF I'm already bald... I may as well play the blues.

  • Would anyone ever play in a successful band like this again? Or is it all this R&B shit.

  • @ErnstBecker yup i remember when i seen this appearence on the interview he done that's shown on this video i had tears in me eyes and i dont think there will ever be another person like ronnie or luke they wor two of a kind

  • @Scrapncubs Regardless, Ronnie was a brilliant musician and a legend in his time. He's one of the greatest performers in history, and a part of legendary band that produced not only he, but Luke Kelly as well. The issue is not his musical style or genre, the issue is respect. Respect for Ronnie Drew and his final recording before his death in 2008.
