Denver Zoo Welcomes the Birth of Giraffe, Cricket

Denver Zoo welcomed the birth of a female reticulated giraffe named Cricket on 4/14/2010. Watch the video of her birth and her first steps in the Giraffe Yard and then come see her in person! This video is of a real giraffe birth and is not for the faint of heart.

Zookeepers name newborn animals after many things ranging from their favorite places, people or characters. In this case, a zookeeper continued a Disney theme. A previous giraffe was named Pongo, after a dog in 101 Dalmatians. Cricket was named after Jiminy Cricket, the talking cricket from Pinocchio.

I've seen a couple other videos of zoo giraffes giving birth, out in their yard with crowds watching. How nice that this momma has been able to have a quiet, non-public place to have her baby. Go Denver zoo! =D
