Russian youth struggle with drink and drug abuse - 27 Feb 08

It's estimated around one hundred and twenty thousand Russians die each year from drug and alcohol abuse. Now Dmitry Medvedev - Vladimir Putin's likely successor - has promised to tackle the problem if he's elected president on March 2nd.

But under Putin, Russia's substance abuse victims have been largely ignored by an administration more keen on promoting its social achievements.

In the third of our series on the State of Russia, Jonah Hull reports from the city of Perm in the Ural Mountains about the problem claiming so many young lives.

everything who change your awareness or can make you addicted is a drug!

The average Russian (including men, women, and kids) drinks 18 L of alcohol/year, the equivalent of 60 bottles of vodka. 30,000 people die of poisoning/yr, and 8,000 die from drunk driving. And having been friends w Russian exchange students, I've seen this dangerous drinking 1st hand. To the indignant commenters: if you are not affected, you are lucky, but there is clearly a problem.

I don't think that the U.S. demonized them for "telling the truth", they showed graphic videos of americans being decapitated by muslim fanatics, in particular Nick Berg, that caused outrage from americans.
