I'm guessing most of you jugglers already saw this on the WJF account, but I wanted to have it on my account too. Here is a little more info too:
I spent 3 weeks in Nairobi Kenya this summer with a group from my church. Made In The Streets (http://www.made-in-the-streets.org/) has one center in the slums of Eastleigh and one in the countryside of Kamulu. The center in the slums offers a shower and a meal to street children. Kids who come regularly and show serious signs of wanting to change can be accepted to the Kamulu center where they live, attend school, work on the farm, and learn a trade (hairdressing, carpentry, auto mechanics, beading...) so they can support themselves once they leave the center at age 18. The life they live on the streets is a terrible one filled with drugs, hunger and abuse, but it is also hard for them to leave. They are addicted to drugs including alcohol, marijuana but mainly the super inexpensive sniffing glue. Once they can escape this life they can clean up and live without fear and make something of their lives.
We led two different camps while we were there. One camp for kids who were already living at Kamulu, and one camp for 12 boys up for consideration to be accepted to the program. We were coming up with as many things as possible to do with these kids and I thought juggling would be a great activity. I told Jason Garfield of the World Juggling Federation that I would be doing this and he sent me with almost 100 bean bags, over 30 clubs, tshirts, dvds, and books.
The kids caught on so quickly it was amazing. All the juggling you see in this video is after never more than 4 days. Including the small performance!
Jason hopes to send me back soon and bring one of my students to WJF6. So keep a look out for the sponsorship program that should be set up soon. Thanks so much and enjoy!
