Union Pacific's steam train

The steam train, Engine No.844 came through our part of the Sierra yesterday ! What a thrill to hear that whistle and see the smoke rising out of the stack ! Here's a short video from yesterday, April 17,2009 as it came through Sierra's famous "Cape Horn" a giant "S" turn weaving through the mountains. This train was built for Union Pacific in 1944. It came from Cheyenne, Wyoming (that's its home), through Utah, across Nevada, over the Sierra Nevada in California at Donner Pass and down the western slope, on it's way to Oakland, then its return trip to Cheyenne via a different route.

Terrific video! Love the production - very coordinated and informative. Oh and I must note - riding in the cab of this thing is one of the most awesome things I've ever experienced. Just make sure to bring ear plugs! :p

Thanks so much! It was such a thrill!!! There's a little tiny road off Rollins Lake Rd. that takes you right down to an overlook of 'Cape Horn.'

I'll be posting some footage of a restored British 1800s steam train that is still in operation in Burma...we rode on it!!!

Really wish I had been there at the Long Ravine fill curve. We were pretty close by but had thw wrong idea to shoot the highway overpass shot - FROM THE WRONG TRESTLE MAIN SIDE!
