Nova Scotia Farmers have a hit on their hands! The Saturday Markets at the new Halifax Seaport Farmers Market have demonstrated that the local community's pent up demand for LOCAL high quality produce and appreciation for a naturally powered building on the Halifax Waterfront. The new market uses 75% less power and water than than that required by the National Model Energy Code. The Saturday Markets' atmospheres have been festive with much magic and joy felt throughout. Thousands of customers steadily streamed through the doors for seven hours straight, with overwhelmingly positive comments from customers and vendors alike. Halifax appears to be embracing its new room on its historic waterfront opposite George's Island.
Environmental initiatives include wind power generation, geothermal heating, solar hot water, natural day lighting, water conservation, passive ventilation, sustainable harvested wood, drought tolerant green roof, 90% construction waste diversion and non toxic, regional and recycled materials.
The new market is approximately twice as large as the former location and will be open six days a week. The rooftop features a large observation deck overlooking George's Island and the entrance to Halifax Harbour. Cruise ships such as the Queen Mary will berth at the market each year during cruise ship season.
