Sloth Rescue in Panama

The Asociación Panamericana para la Conservación (APPC), a non-profit organization in Panama rescued this sloth at a construction site at the (former) Howard Air Force Base in Panama. After being measured and weighed (for scientific purposes) and checked over, he was released into a protected forest. Two-toed sloths, like this one here, are very difficult to rescue because they are usually very aggressive and will use their razor-sharp claws and sharp teeth in defense. Three-toed sloths however are very docile and easy to rescue. Only individuals who have been trained to rescue two-toed sloths should attempt to rescue them because they can be very dangerous.

The APPC is currently working along side construction crews in areas that are being deforested to rescue wildlife as the trees fall. Each animal that is rescued (from small frogs and lizards to monkeys, sloths, and ocelots) is checked over and if healthy and uninjured are taken to protected forests and released. so glad they are saving them- now we know- how do you handle a sloth? these guys are so vunerable, but strong!! and will bite. It looked awful, but guy did good. matter of fact. Glad he does!!! thank-you kind workers!!
