A bad catalytic converter can make a car overheat by causing a backup of pressure in the cylinder head. Pull over and shut a vehicle down if it overheats with tips from a certified master mechanic in this free video on car maintenance.

  • Overheating is most likely caused by a dead fan, thermostat or something else in the closed cooling system This is highly unlikely.

  • I am trying to clean out my catalytic converter. In order to remove my catalytic converter I have to remove the whole exhaust system from the engine and towards the back. Instead of doing this,. Can I remove the oxygen sensor the one that is sitting in front of the converter and use a flush gun tank like the ones they use to flush out a/c system contaminents from the line with lacquer thinner? Do you think this will clean the system if I do this a couple of times?

  • one more thing is there a certain thinner you should not use?

  • can it cause a random misfire? P0300... change spark plugs, cables, ignition coil cap/ rotor, fuel filter, pcv, even downstream O2 sensor. Im tired of throwing parts!!!

  • FOR RECREATIONAL USE OR USE WHERE ALLOWED: You can cut the cat off and rig the o2 sensor up so it gets hot but it gets fresh air on the outside. Apparently it works on the XJs with the 4.0L engines. Im trying it on mine, im getting overheating, and I got a code about a bad o2 reading after the cat

  • @lozphg Not always. Sometimes it can be a problem with the EGR system or a faulty Oxygen sensor (which is what my problem was) among other things.

  • @kargmeister1337 it can be a major problem, I've had mine get so clogged that my car wouldn't even stay running. I still haven't replaced them but I've cut the exhaust off after the cat. (It was also clogged)

  • does the car have to overheat for it to have a bad catalytic converter???

    pm me back please

  • my vehicle has a clogged catalytic converter and its still running. It does sometimes have a loss in power but the mechanic said that its not a major problem right now. I am going to get a replacement.

  • i have a f150 04 check engine light is on scan truck says catalytic converter running lean is there something i can do without buying new converter
