STILL FLASHBACK
"Come on Nick, let's start writing," Dad called.
"What about Nicki?" Nick asked, pulling me by my hand with him into the kitchen.
"What about her?" Dad asked, looking confused.
"I want her to help!" Nick said. I looked at the ground, knowing what my father's response would be.
"Son, I don't think so."
"But Dad!" Nick exclaimed.
"Fine," he said, giving up before Nick got to into the arguement.
*****************************************
The song was beautiful, Nick's voice was breath taking. It took Nick fifteen minutes to talk Dad into letting me sing back up...whatever.
Nick performed the song with a musical tape at rehearsals for everyone. They were blown away by the song. I watched from the sidelines...like always. It doesn't bother me anymore I guess. I've been putting up with it for so long, I've given up fighting it.
Nick and I walked into our school with Joe and Kevin. They kissed the tops of our head, then hurried off to their various friends and what not. Nick looped his arm through mine, and we set off toward our homeroom.
I think we caught sight of it at the same time, but I was intent on walking right past it. Nick, however, had another intention. He pulled me over to the large bulliten board, which held the sign ups for the school talent show. Open to all, but only sixth grade and up ever signed up.
"Can we?" Nick asked. "Please?"
I sighed. "Bubby, I'm not sure..."
"Sissy please! I don't want to have that song just me!"
"But that's the way it was written...only you."
"I don't care. And don't even bring Dad into this. He will never listen to us, and I'm sick of him down playing your talent! On the soccer field is the only place he gives you the congratulations you deserve. We're performing it," Nick said firmely. And with that, he put down our names.
******************************
The whole school was sitting in the auditorium.
I was in between Adam and Nick. I glanced at the clock.
"If they don't hurry up, we won't be able to perform. Mom's getting us at two," I whispered.
"You have plenty of time. Only six acts signed up," Adam told us.
I sighed. Nick grabbed my hand and squeezed it. I gave him a small smile, and he raised his eyebrows at me.
"What's wrong?" he asked through his eyes.
"I feel like we are disobeying Dad," I replied.
"No we are not! It's his fault he doesn't want the song to be better."
I rolled my eyes, and Nick kissed my cheek.
The acts ranged from suckish to ok. Four acts had gone when our principal, Coach Curd, called Nick and I up.
No one knew what to think, because we were two third graders going up against sixth, seventh, and eigth graders. I handed the instrumental CD to the principal, and he put it in. The school was silent, waiting for us to start.
nicki and nick are going to sing 1000 times better than all of those other kids and then their dad is going to realize that girls can sing!
